What Is Wage Slavery?

In simple terms, wage slavery is the requirement of a job in order to live a safe and respectable life (i.e. you are nothing without a job). In socioeconomic speak, it is a condition in which people are wholly dependent on income from employment in order to make a living, often with little chance at improving their circumstances.

What Does “FREE THE WAGE SLAVES” Mean?

“FREE THE WAGE SLAVES” is a statement calling for the release of working people from the necessity of a job in order to live with dignity. In the USA, not having a job (assuming you’re not born into wealth) means you’re at the mercy of caring people in your life for food and shelter. Even worse, a 2021 UChicago study found 40 percent of unsheltered homeless Americans and 53 percent of sheltered homeless people had formal jobs in the year they were observed as homeless. A society that did not require full-time employment in order for the chance of meeting essential needs would look radically different from today’s USA.

Why Is Zander, an American Rapping About Wage Slavery?

Why would I not? I’m a wage slave! I live these raps and chances are you do too. One day, when I’m no longer living Verse 2 of “Company Time/Wage Slave,” I’ll still be mad enough to rap about how awful US quality of life is is due to corporate greed. More than I am anti-capitalist, I’m anti-greed – we should all have enough to live happily. If we don’t, we need to make more and/or share more.
